What is science fiction?

Description:
This lesson is by the school media specialist as an introduction to the science fiction unit. The students already have the background knowledge of genres and fiction. As the introduction lesson, students will review the elements of a science fiction story, helping to prepare them for their final project of their own science fiction story.
Goals & Objectives:

Students will be able to define science fiction.

Students will be able to locate sources in print and online to research science information.

 

Using 3 online sources, 7th grade ELA students will be able to collect information for their science fiction story.

7th grade ELA students will be able to define science fiction.

Materials & Sources:

Science fiction books.

Encyclopedias.

Middle school science fiction video.

Computers with bookmarked websites.

Data collection sheets, works cited sheets.

 

Procedures:

Brainstorming: What is science fiction?

Define science fiction.

Elements of science fiction.

Science facts turn fiction.

Show websites for information.

Works cited sheet and review.


 

Assessment:
Each student will define science fiction and its elements on the data collection sheet. Each student will have at least three online sources documented with information notes on science/ fiction on their data collection sheet. At the end of unit, each student will write and present their own science fiction story.
