This lesson plan is for three 25-minute periods held in the library media center. Prior collaboration with the classroom teacher (CT) is advisable so that students understand the impact of learned information literacy skills on classroom assignments. The School Library Media Specialist (SLMS) guides students throughout the evaluation and citation processes.
Day One:
1. The CT will introduce the criteria for completion of a biography report on a famous African-American and explain that students must include two websites as resources in a bibliography attached to the report.
2. The SLMS will present the "Consider the Source" power point presentation in the Library Media Center.
3. Students will take turns answering questions posed on each slide throughout power point presentation. Students may use dictionaries to determine correct usage of new technology.
4. The SLMS will allow wireless microphone to circulate through class for each student who asks/answers questions.
Day Two:
1. The SLMS will distribute the "Consider the Source" graphic organizers and a list of six website addresses (links from pathfinders on school or public library website or specially requested sites from CT) for student use.
2. Students will choose two websites from the list of websites and answer questions on graphic organizer individually.
3. Students will organize into small groups of 3-4 who share the same website evaluations and compare similarities and differences of Yes/No answers among group. Students will write brief notes on their individual differences in the "Notes" section, and discuss those differences.
Day Three:
1. The SLMS will ditribute the "Plug It In" graphic organizers and demonstrate how to write an electronic resouce citation on the dry erase board.
2. Students will write two electronic resource citations by revisiting chosedn websites (based on SLMS' model).
3. Students will exchange "Plug It In" grpahic organizers (among members of small groups) and identify correct/incorrect citations.
