Research and the Civil Rights Movement
Description:
Students will learn about significant people and events during the Civil Rights Movements. Students will learn about and implement a specific research process during this assignment.

Students will be able to identify important people/events the Civil Rights and Women’s Movements

 

Students will be able to implement a research process and identify the stages within

 

Students will strengthen critical thinking skills by identifying appropriate resources for research and utilizing a variety of print and not-print materials

 

Student will practice note-taking and information organization skills

 

Students will demonstrate new knowledge by writing a research paper and completing a “My-Space Page” relating to their person/event

 

Correlating New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards 

 

NJCCCS 6.4 (United States and New Jersey History) All students will demonstrate knowledge of United States and New Jersey history in order to understand life and events in the past and how they relate to the present and future.

6.4.9-12.K.6

Analyze the Civil Rights and Women's Movements, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Civil Rights Act (1957 and 1964), the Little Rock Schools Crisis, the Voting Rights Act, Brown v. Board of Education, the formation of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the American Indian Movement (AIM), the formation of the National Organization for Women (NOW), and the passing of Title IX.

Materials & Sources:

Various print and non-print resources available in the Library Media Center, including reference books, databases (Facts on File)

Word processing and presentation applications to complete the final products

Day 1

 

 

 

-CT introduces the assignment and provides a handout with the details (3 page research paper, My-Space page)

-TL shows a PowerPoint on the ISP

-TL demonstrates the entire cycle of the research process and the definitions and descriptions of each stage

-TL goes through the Day 1 tasks with the students  (First three stages: Initiation, Selection, Exploration)

-TL and CT will circulate among students and assist as needed

-Student will watch and listen to presentation on the ISP and its stages. 

-Students review the first three stages by identifying components/aspects

-Students will begin writing in their KWHL Charts

-Students will begin Stage 3 Exploration by browsing and scanning print materials only

Day 2

 

 

 

-TL will review stages from previous day

-TL will discuss the tasks of today; continued work of Stage 3 Exploration and emphasize goal to reach Stage 4 Formulation by the end of the period

-TL will demonstrate online database Facts on File

-TL and CT will circulate among students and assist as needed

-Students will view demonstration of Facts on File

-Students will continue Stage 3 and work towards Stage 4

-Students will continue writing in their KWHL Charts

-Students will browse and scan print resources and utilize the online database to continue exploration

-Any students not present during Day 1 will meet with the CT and TL for instruction as needed

Day 3

 

 

-TL will review stages of work completed from previous day

-TL will discuss tasks for today; identification of Stage 4 and begin work on Stage 5

-TL and CT will circulate among students and assist as needed

-Students will identify the focus of their research (Stage 4)

-Students will begin Stage 5 Collection

-Students will continue writing in their KWHL Charts

- Any students not present during preceding day(s) will meet with the CT and TL for instruction as needed

Day 4

-TL will determine that all students are progressing in line with the stages

-TL and CT will circulate among students and assist as needed

-Students will continue Stage 5

-Students will continue writing in their KWHL Charts

-Any students not present during preceding day(s)s will meet with the CT and TL for instruction as needed

Independent Work Time

No class time will be provided by the TL and CT for students to continue work on this assignment.  The TL will be available to  assist students

-Students will complete the remainder of the assignment using personal time.  Their final products will be ready for submission and presentation in 2 weeks.

-Students will complete their KWHL Charts

Assessment:
KWHL Chart, research paper and MySpace page (to be completed in a PowerPoint presentation format).
Collaborators:
The classroom teacher and library media specialist collaborated to integrate specific research skills into this lesson. An emphasis was placed upon the students to learn a research process, as well as learn about events and people during the Civil Rights Movement
