Note Card & MLA Citations and Bibliography Creation
Description:
Here the student will be able to effectively learn to take notes using note card writing. Additionally the student will learn how to create MLA Citations and ultimately a Works Cited/Bibliography page.
Goals & Objectives:

Students will be able to extract information based on articles of their choosing in order to create 2 note cards. One will directly quote from selected article, while other will paraphrase information found in article.

 

Students will further reinforce note taking skills by creating note cards using periodicals, databases, and print publications they select. Students will show their ability to paraphrase and directly quote from publications using materials provided. 

 

Students will learn objectives to creating a Works Cited/Bibliography page for research project.

 

Students will understand the principles of MLA style of bibliography creation, alphabetizing entries, appropriately underlining components, and ensuring that each element is found within bibliography.

Materials & Sources:
  • A selection of fictional and non-fictional print books
  • A selection of print reference materials
  • A selection of journal/print periodicals
  • Computer access to designated online databases
  • 7 note cards for each student
  • Handout 1 (see below)
  • Handout 2 (see below)
Procedures:

Day 1:

·   The TL will begin the lesson with an introduction, asking students if they know why citations and note cards are needed.

·   The TL will demonstrate how note cards created using the Handout 1.

·   The TL will hand out a copy of Reader’s Digest to each student.

·   The TL will go over the key elements of Reader’s Digest, noting the title, issue date, author(s) of a selected article, along with reading and selecting some information to be noted on a card.

·   The CT and TL will instruct students to begin creating two sample note cards of their own.

·   CT and TL will assist students as needed. CT and TL will review of two sample cards and instruct students who have completed task to assist classmates who have not.

·   TL will disperse carted publications, ranging from graphic novels, fiction/non-fiction books and periodicals to use to create five additional note cards.

·   TL will instruct that students should vary their note cards to include one from each of the above categories.

·   TL and CT will review, approve and collect the note cards for Day 2 activities.

 

Day 2:

·   TL will provide students will Handout 2 reviewing each of the citation principles for different materials.

·   TL will provide an instruction of the MLA Works Cited standards and rules.

·   TL will ask students to begin transposing note card information onto works cited/bibliography page.

·   TL and CT will review students’ progress as they complete assignment and assist students as needed.

Assessment:
In-class execution of 2 sample note cards done collectively using the Reader's Digest periodical.

Review of 5 additional note cards done individually, using several different resources (e.g., newspaper, magazine, database, print publication, etc.).

Creation of sample works cited page using the information students recorded on each of the five note cards.
