World Almanac Scavenger Hunt

Description:
Students will participate in a scavenger hunt using the almanac and its index as a tool to find answers to questions.
Goals & Objectives:

Students will be introduced to almanacs.

Students will have practice using an index.

Students will work independently or in pairs to complete an activity.

Procedures:

 

The TL or teacher will . . .

Day 1

 

 

 

1.      L informs students that they will be participating in a Scavenger Hunt, and that the winner(s) will receive a prize (erasers or Applebee’s desserts). 

2.      L passes out one almanac to each student.  Informs students that they will be using the almanac in their “hunt”.

3.      L creates a KWHL chart on big white paper.

4.      L supplies a sample question to the class.

5.      L passes out the scavenger hunt sheets and explains the rules: 1. Students may work either independently or in pairs 2. Both the answer to the question and the page number must be given. 

6.      L assists students that need extra help throughout activity.

7.      L collects scavenger hunt sheets.

 

1.      Students will have two minutes to browse through the almanac once they have been passed out.

2.      Students supply information on what they know, what they’d like to know about what an almanac is, what an index is and how to use it and where to find it. 

 

3.      Students will look up answer to teacher’s sample question.

 

4.      Students will decide whether to work independently or in pairs.

 

5.      Using the almanac’s index, students will look up answers to questions on scavenger hunt sheet either independently or in pairs.

Day 2

 

 

 

  1. L directs students’ attention to KWHL chart.  Asks students if they can please share what they have learned about almanacs and indexes.

 

  1. L passes out scavenger hunt sheets. 

 

  1. L will lead the class as students supply answers and page numbers for each question. 

 

  1. L awards prizes to high scorers.

 

  1. L collects papers.
  1. Students will supply what they have learned about almanacs and indexes.

 

  1. Students will complete their scavenger hunt sheets. 

 

  1. Students supply answers and page numbers to each question as they grade their own papers. 
Assessment:
KWHL chart illustrates students’ progress.
Ability to locate index and look up subjects/information.
Once subject/page number is found, student is able to glean correct information to answer questions.
