Finding Books about Pets in the School Library Media Center
Description:
Thus far, in this module of three lessons, we have covered the family, the holidays and this final lesson which will cover pets and will initially introduce the Dewey Decimal classifications governing types of pets.
Goals & Objectives:

INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL :
At the end of this unit the students will be able to locate non-fiction books about the pets they have or wish to have using the computer in the library.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

The measurable outcome of this lesson will be for the child to complete two index cards indicating author, title and call number from two pets from the reference sheet.

 

The class will also find two pictures from various magazines in order to construct a class collage of pets and find a book from the school library media center about the pet of their choice.

MATERIALS AND AIDS: media center computers, and media center books, index record cards, magazines (such as Dog World, Cat World, etc.) Large poster board, two sided scotch tape.

Procedures:

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES

a.        Focusing event completing index cards with Dewey Decimal call numbers.  Instructor will model use of the card and complete one for a topic other than pets.

b.        Teaching procedures : Instructor will once again model use of the Library of Congress website at http://www.loc.gov/index.html choosing the Library Catalogues tab and Basic Search at http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First and search by keyword “PETS” demonstrating the subject search and books under that category.  Each student will choose a pet and use a media center computer to find a book about the pet.  Instructor will assist individual students as needed in their search.

c.        Formative check: Each student will present two cards and two magazine pictures for the class collage.

d.        Student Participation Kinesthetic Learners will receive hands-on activity at the computer and cutting out the pictures from the magazines and building the class collage.  Visual Learners will evaluate computer information and keep track of the catalogue information with the cards to keep a record. The Auditory Learners will state why they chose the various pets in a round robin discussion.

         e.     Closure: Students will post their class pictures on the collage and discussion will take place regarding children’s pets and stories of the pets in their lives.

Assessment:
EVALUATION PROCEDURES: By using the media center catalogue computer students were able to locate enumerate non fiction books from the media center concerning one subject area (pets) and complete call numbers properly on cards provided.

Students will also participate in generating a class collage with the pet of their choice and individually tell a story about the pet in their lives.
