Learning to access books in the library media center using the computer
Description:
Students will learn how to access non-fiction books on holidays by using the Library of Congress database. This lesson is a continuation of a previously posted lesson and represents Day 2 in the series.
Goals & Objectives:

INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL :

At the end of this unit the students will be able to locate books about the family holidays  using the computer in the library.

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE:

The measurable outcome of this lesson will be for the child to draw a symbol for their favorite family holiday and  describe what their family does on that day in a short class presentation. They will also have a book to present to the media specialist/classmates that they have found by computer search and obtained from the library shelf which they will share as part of their presentation to their classmates.

Materials & Sources:

 

MATERIALS AND AIDS: media center computers, and media center books, index record cards, magazines (such as Dog World, Cat World, etc.) Large poster board, two sided scotch tape.

Procedures:

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES

a.        Focusing event: presenting  example family tradition to the class in a discussion.

b.        Teaching procedures: Each student will receive the book list of title, author and subject and use a media center computer to find a book about the specific holiday.

c.        Formative check: Each student will present their book with a description about the family celebration illustrated by a symbol they will draw  on the class mural.

d.       Student Participation

        Kinesthetic Learners will receive hands-on activity at the computer and the library shelf and will demonstrate to the class how they spend that holiday .  Visual Learners will mark the flip board after each persons presentation to keep track of the favorite class holidays with a chart to show the most popular. The Auditory Learners will question the presenters with two questions for each presenter from the audience.

e.       Closure: Students will compare peer’s various holiday preferences by viewing the flip chart.

f.         If time permits, poems for the most popular holiday months will be read from A Child’s Calendar by John Updike (ISBN: 0823414450)

Assessment:
EVALUATION PROCEDURES: By using the media center catalogue computer, students were able to locate and select books in the media center pertaining to their holidays. They will present a brief presentation to the class regarding the holiday they have chosen and display a book they have found through the Library of Congress catalogue search which pertains to the holiday.
