Using a computer database to locate books in the library
Description:
Elementary school students often use books from the media center to read on topics related to their own personal interests (pets, Holidays, etc.) or to address classroom assignments (communities/the family). This series of lessons will enable students to use a free database (available on the Library of Congress website) to locate books in the school library media center.
Goals & Objectives:

Day 1:

INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL :
At the end of this lesson the student will be able to locate specific books about the family using the computer in the library media center.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: The measurable outcome of this lesson will be for the child to have a book to present to the media specialist that they have found by computer search and obtained from the library shelf.  Students will present a brief oral report on the family book they have selected.

Procedures:
Day 1:

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES

a.        Focusing event: hands-on computer training with modeling.

b.        Teaching procedures : Each student will receive the book list of title and author and use the media center computer to find a book.

c.        Students will prepare an index card for their book.

d.        Formative check: Each student will present a book with a description about the family

e.        Student Participation Kinesthetic Learners will receive hands-on activity at the computer and also have the real life experience of searching and obtaining a library book about the family from the shelf Visual Learners will see their book cover and title on the computer.  The Auditory Learners will describe their books.

f.         Closure: Students will draw present a brief oral report on the book they have selected, their expectations of the book and why they selected it.

 

 

Assessment:
EVALUATION PROCEDURES: By using the media center catalogue computer students were able to locate and select books in the media center. Students will be evaluated upon completion of their index card as well as the brief oral presentation concerning the book they selected which includes their expectations of the book and why they selected it.
