Into Africa: Online Resources
Description:
Social studies teacher and school library media specialist will work together on this lesson. This lesson was created to introduce 10th graders to the available online resources so that they can better complete their research projects on Africa. Students will be introduced to the project by their teacher and will then be introduced to the online resources by the school library media specialist. Students will explore the resources individually and will then be put into groups where they will share their findings. Next, students will pair up and teach each other about the different resources. Finally, student will then use the information they have gathered to aid them in creating their projects about Africa.
Goals & Objectives:

Instructional Goals:

  • Students will be able to access online resources
  • Students will become experts on the online resources
  • Students will teach their peers about the online resources
  • Students will be able to use the online resources to complete their Africa projects

 

Learning Objectives: 

  • Using the online resource assigned to them, students will be able to  fill out their questionnaire
  • Students will be able to successfully work in a group to share the information they have discovered about their online resource
  • Students will be able to use the information shared in their groups to fill out additional questionnaires
  • Student will have a strong enough understanding about their online resource so they will be able to teach a peer about their resource
  • Students will be able to share one way their online resource will help them with their research project about Africa

 

Motivational Goals:

  • Generate interest in the research process
  • Establish the importance of information skills
  • Build students’ confidence in their ability to learn and use information skills
  • Motivate students to continue to use information skills after the lesson

Procedures:

Introduction 

Day 1

  1. Students will enter the computer lab and sit at a computer
  2. Their social studies teacher will go over their Africa project again to refresh their memories
  3. SLMS will begin by discussing how the online resources will aid the students when they start their research projects (Relevance)
  4. SLMS will give an overview of the lesson, what the students will be doing each day etc. (Confidence)
  5. SLMS will pass out the Outline to the Students
  6. Students can ask questions about the outline
  7. Using the Smart Board, the SLMS will show the students how to access the online resources
  8. Students can ask questions about accessing the online resources
  9. Students will then be divided into groups of 6 (pre-planned by the teacher and the SLMS) and each student will be given an online resource that they will become an expert at
  10. SLMS will distribute the questionnaire for students to look at
  11. SLMS will again summarize what the students will be doing throughout the lesson (Confidence)
  12. Students will be able to ask any final questions they may have

 

Body: 

Day 2

  1. Students will enter the computer lab
  2. SLMS will summarize what the students learned during the last session reiterating how it will help them with their Africa research project (Relevance and Confidence)
  3. Students will be able to ask any questions they may have
  4. SLMS will show students how to access the online resources again (Confidence)
  5. Students will be reminded of the online resource they have been assigned
  6. Students will begin exploring their online resource (Need for Achievement)
  7. Students will fill out their questionnaire
  8. Students will be able to ask questions at anytime during their exploration
  9. Before the end of the session students will be briefed on the next session (Confidence)

Day 3

  1. Students will enter the computer lab
  2. Students will be given time to finish their questionnaire
  3. Once all students have finished their questionnaires, students will come together in their groups (Need for Affiliation)
  4. SLMS will explain what the groups should be doing during their sharing session (Confidence)
  5. Students will share their findings with their group members
  6. Group members will fill out a questionnaire for each group members’ online resource
  7. At the end of the sharing session, each group member should have a questionnaire filled out for each online resource (6 in total)
  8. All questionnaires will be collected at the end of the session so that the SLMS can document that the task was completed
  9. Before the end of the session the SLMS will go over what the students will be doing in the final session (Confidence)

 

Conclusion: 

Day 4

  1. Students will enter the computer lab
  2. SLMS will hand back the students’ questionnaires
  3. SLMS will summarize what the students have done in the past sessions; tying it into their research projects (Relevance and Confidence)
  4. Within each group, students will break into groups of 2 pre-planned by the teacher and the SLMS
  5. Each pair will teach each other about their online resource (Need for Power)
  6. The class will come back together
  7. SLMS will ask the class to share one way that their resource will help them with their research project
  8. SLMS will write each idea on the white board
  9. Students will be able to ask any final questions they may have and evaluate the lesson
Assessment:
- Questionnaires will be collected so that the teacher and the SLMS can document that the students completed this task
- While students are working in groups and in pairs the teacher and the SLMS will be walking around observing the students' interactions
- Each student will have to share one way that their online resource will help them with their project *this idea will be written on a white board by the SLMS
