Let's Learn About the Iroquois
Description:
This will be a collaborative lesson between the School Library Media Specialist and a fourth grade classroom teacher. The fourth grade class will be writing their first report on an American Indian Tribe. This report will coincide with the students' history lesson on Native Americans. The students will prepare a written report about their American Indian Tribe along with an art project for this assignment. The information literacy skills of using reference books in the library as well as using the school district's databases will be taught and reinforced throughout this project. Students will also be taught how to create basic citations for all print and electronic resources used during this project and will create a bibliography of all resources used.
Goals & Objectives:

Instructional Goals:

  • Students will be able to successfully find the information they need in the electronic resources provided by the instructor.
  • Students will be able to find the information they need in the print resources provided by the instructor.
  • Students will gain a better understanding of their Native American Tribe's way of life in the past and present.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to work individually while conducting research for their report.
  • Students will demonstrate their ability to create basic citations for all the resources (print and electronic) used during their research.
  • Students will present information orally and visually.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will develop information literacy skills using print and electronic resources.
  • Students will create basic citations for all resources used.
  • Students will organize their report with a beginning, middle, and end.
  • Students will present information orally and visually, following a presentation rubric.

 

Motivational Goals:

  • Generate student interest in the research process.
  • Students will be confident in their ability to research a topic.
  • Students will feel confident when utilizing both print and electronic resources in the media center.
  • Generate student confidence in creating citations for both print and electronic resoruces.

Procedures:

Introduction:

The students will have multiple opprotunities to come into the media center to work on their report.  The School Library Media Specialist (SLMS) and classroom teacher will assist students with locating the information they need as well as assist with any other questions students may have.  There are two main parts to this assignment: the report, which will be worked on during class time and the art project, which will be completed at home. 

 

DAY 1:

  1. The SLMS and teacher will introduce and discuss the Native American Tribe assignment with the fourth grade students.
  2. The teacher will hand out an assignment sheet to students, describing the elements and information that will need to be included in the report.
  3. Students will recieve a blank outline handout to formulate their report ideas and sequence information.
  4. SLMS will show students how to locate and use print resources available within the media center.
  5. SLMS will teach students how to create basic citations for print resources.
  6. SLMS will hand out worksheet that will help students create their citations for their resource bibliography. 
  7. Students will start to record resources used for their bibliography.

 

DAY 2:

Students will return to the media center to continue work on their reports.  Students will be utilizing the electronic resources along with continuing to use print resources.

 

  1. The SLMS will review how to locate print resources with the students.
  2. The SLMS will instruct students on using electronic resources available in the media center.
  3. The SLMS will teach students how to create citations for electronic resources.
  4. The SLMS will review how to create citations for print resources.
  5. The student will work individually on this report, but will be allowed to discuss the reports and the research process with their fellow classmates.
  6. The SLMS and teacher will continue to offer assistance to the students while they work toward completing their research.

 

DAY 3-5

Students will return to the media center to continue work on their reports.  The students will be utilizing both the electronic and print resources available.

  1. The SLMS will review how to locate and use the print and electronic resources available in the media center
  2. SLMS will review how to create citations for print and electronic resources.
  3. Students will continue to gather information for thier reports.
  4. Students will start to organize their information using the Outline handout provided to them during the introduction on DAY 1.
  5. Students will work individually to collect information from various resources for their reports.
  6. The SLMS and teacher will continue to assist students with their research questions.

 

Conclusion:

During the following two class times, the students will begin to finish up their research.  By DAY 7 students should have all their necessary research completed so they can start to write their report. Students should also have resource information to begin to compile their resource bibliography. The SLMS  and classroom teacher will grant another day of research to students who need a little more time completing their research.

 

Students will return to their classroom to write their reports.  The classroom teacher will be providing assistance with this part of the assignment. Students should start working on their art projects to go along with their reports.

 

Upon completion of the assignment, the SLMS will visit the fourth grade classroom for the presentations.

Assessment:
1. The SLMS will assess if both print and electronic resources were used.
2. The SLMS will assess if citations are correct.
3. The SLMS will assess whether report has a beginning, middle, and end.
4. The SLMS will assess student understanding of topic from their
presentation.
