Using the Internet for researching national parks

The purpose of this buILder is to guide you through the process of using the Internet for research.   In conjunction with your social studies unit on national parks, you will decide on a national park that you would  like to research and use the Internet to locate information.

On the left side of the buILder are tabs which contain links to useful websites that you can use for your project.

There are four types of sites that you can use:

The first type is a subject specific website that contains information about nationals parks.  These sites deal specifically with national parks information and are a great place to start your research.
The second type of website is a general reference website.  These sites contain information about many topics and may or may not contain information on your topic.   An example of a reference site is an online encyclopedia or dictionary.

The third type of website is a web portal.    A web portal is a starting out point for internet browsing and exploring.   You are able to go to the portal and be directed to other useful websites.  In many cases , a web portal is arranged by subject.

The last type of website is a search engine.    A search engine searches the internet and provides you with a list of sites.    It is important to use the appropriate search terms or the list may not yield results that are on point to your topic.

To start the assignment, please click on the "National Park Websites" button and browse the websites listed.   After you have selected a national park that you would like to learn about, please move on to the next buttons and try to find information using general reference sites, web portals, and search engines.

After you have found relevant information, please write a one-page paper containing information about the park you selected.

At the next session, we will review and discuss how you found most of your information and which sites you found most useful.
