As we learned in class, cancer is uncontrolled cell division.  Despite this simple denotation, cancer is one of the most complex and frustrating diseases known to the medical community.  It is sneaky, indiscriminate, and does not follow normal mitotic division.

You have been assigned a job as a cancer research specialist.  As an oncologist, you must write a review paper on a cancer of your choice.  The review paper is designed to demonstrate your knowledge of the cell cycle, mitosis, and the specific cancer you’ve researched.  Please use the following organization techniques to help you write your paper-

1.      Select the form of cancer (be specific)-  ______________________________________

2.      Identify the major organs/cells affected: _____________________________________________

3.      Identify symptoms of the disease and how it is diagnosed: ______________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

4.      Identify survival rates in the US and other countries: ___________________________________

5.      Identify any causes or mutations known for this cancer: ________________________________

_____________________________________________________________________________

6.      Current treatment options: ______________________________________________________

7.      Current Research (primary source article needed here)

8.      Future treatment options and prevention

Please use this form in your report

Section Title:

Contents

Abstract-

1 paragraph- A succinct paragraph outlining your report.  This should include the basics of the cancer without much detail.  It should be written as a summary of what you’ll be discussing later in the paper.

Background Information-

1-2 paragraphs- Detailed description of the cancer, major organs affected, symptoms of disease, diagnostic techniques, known causes or mutations (if not known, indicate)

Current Treatment Options-

1-2 paragraph- All treatment options for this disease should be mentioned here (i.e.- chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, gene therapy, etc).  Using your research techniques, find what specific drugs are used during chemotherapy

Research-

1 paragraph-Find a primary research article about the cancer.  This article must be recent (since 2008) and should outline new findings or treatments for the cancer.  In this section please write a one paragraph summary of the research article.

Conclusion-

1 paragraph- A concise overview of your cancer followed by a hope-filled summary of new treatment options or preventive strategies.
