<item><title>Pictures, Paintings, Portraits...Not Porn Using Sources Other Than Google to Find Information Available on the Internet</title><link>http://www.informationliteracy.org/plans/view/407</link><description>The students will be taught the differences between a search engine and a database in their quest for information about an artist of their choice. They will use the information that they gather to make a PowerPoint presentation for next year’s class, who will be visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  These students will recognize that search engines often provide erroneous sites, and sometimes are overwhelming in producing results. They will learn how to access free databases available through the school and public library. They will complete the information requested on a worksheet in preparation for the development of the PowerPoint. They will recognize the necessity of documenting the location of the information found.</description></item>

Subsequent comparison to other sources reveals dihydrogen monoxide as an obscure name for water.&amp;nbsp; After a brief teacher-led discussion about what they&amp;rsquo;ve learned about evaluating websites, students assess additional websites to determine whether they&amp;rsquo;re legitimate or a hoax and present their findings to the class.&amp;nbsp; The lesson takes 90-120 minutes of class time, depending on presentation options chosen.&amp;nbsp; It may be completed in one block or divided as necessary.</description></item>

<item><title>Researching for Success</title><link>http://www.informationliteracy.org/plans/view/495</link><description>The final outcome will be a properly cited five page research paper, using five sources including a periodical, book, and internet resource.  The students will present their final report to the class. </description></item>
<item><title>Orange Soda--Understanding and Creating Advertising</title><link>http://www.informationliteracy.org/plans/view/496</link><description>Brief&amp;nbsp; Description:&amp;nbsp; The twelve students in the community-based education class at Johnson City High School have been working on creating their own businesses. So far, they have created names, products and pricing for their respective businesses. This project will help students to understand advertising and to develop advertising for their businesses. The lesson requires four days for completion, with the first two days in the classroom, followed by two days in the computer lab of the library.&amp;nbsp; The students already have experience in using presentation software. They are highly-motivated by the use of technology. Students&amp;rsquo; reading levels range from Grade 1 to Grade 4.&amp;nbsp; Disabilities include autism and varying degrees of mental retardation. The students enjoy working cooperatively. </description></item>

<item><title>It was a Dark and Stormy Night</title><link>http://www.informationliteracy.org/plans/view/499</link><description>After discussing the themes and ideas of Mary Shelley&amp;rsquo;s Frankenstein and exploring the style of the gothic horror genre, students will write their own short story. Students will also prepare and present a brief PowerPoint on the theme they wrote about. Stories will be proofread by peers and graded by peers. A panel will judge the stories based upon a rubric. The winning stories will be read aloud by the student at a &amp;ldquo;Scary stories told in the dark event.&amp;rdquo;
