Description:

This ESL project is for 9th grade Spanish native speaker students. They will read non-fiction material and become experts in one animal. Students will be involved in different activities such as, writing an essay, research, do a PowerPoint, and an oral presentation.

Goals & Objectives:

 

Instructional Goals:

·         Students will become experts in an animal.

·         Students will able to find reliable resources on the Internet

·         Students will learn PPT and how to use the Smartboard..

 

Learning Objectives: 

·         Students will use various resources, such as, books, internet and encyclopedia.

·         Student will be able to create and present a Power Point presentation.

·         Student will write an essay.

·         Students will learn how to cite the resources.

·         Students will learn how to extract facts from non-fiction material.

 

Motivational Goals:

·         Generate interest in the research process.

·         Build students' confidence in their ability to learn and use information skills.

·         Maintain students' interest in the research process.

·         Reinforce students' confidence in their ability to learn and use information skills.

·         Promote students' satisfaction in their research accomplishments.

·         Motivate students to continue use information skills.

 

Materials:

LCD Projector, A volume of encyclopedia(visual), Smartboard, Laptop cart, Instruction sheet, Chart List of animals, non-fiction books, rubric, Flash drive, PPT presentations, journal,

Procedures:

Introduction  Day 1

1.  Ask students what is their favorite animal

Other questions:  Where does the tiger lives? What kind of food does he eat?

2.  Explain to them that they are going to research and be an expert in an animal of their choice.

3.  Ask them where this information can be obtained.

4.  Explain them the different sources available, for example, books, encyclopedia and Internet

5.  Students learn the basics to surf the Internet

6. Students have practice searching with “tiger”

7.  Students compare results to other groups.

8.  Students plan what animal they are going to research.

 

Body:

Day 2.  Brief summary of previous lesson.

1.  Students work in pairs doing research and practice choosing effectively the information.

2.  Students will identify and extract facts from the Internet.

3. Students will assist each other but each student

concentrates on one animal and records information.

4.  Students learn how to cite Internet sources.

Day 3

1. Students research in the library using encyclopedias and non-fiction books.                                                                                     

2. Students learn how to use the encyclopedia.                         

Explain to students that encyclopedias have volumes and letters and they can go directly to their topic.

3. Students will extract facts from these sources.                                   

4.  Students learn how to cite a book and encyclopedia.

5.  Students learn what plagiarism means.

Day 4.  Students write their essay.                                                       

Students follow a rubric to write their essay.                                         

Day 5. Students learn how to use Power Point                         

to present a show about their animals.                                      

Students learn how to cite the pictures they extracted from the Internet.

Day 6.  Students share their work.                                                       

1. Students present their PowerPoint presentation to class.                                                       

2. Students reflect about the research experience.

Conclusion:  The project will conclude with oral presentations.  I will give each student a sheet to evaluate each classmate during each presentation.  Students will reflect in their journal about their research experience.  Ask them what they have learned and how this information can help them for their future.  Also, what was the fun, easy or difficult part for them.

Assessment:

Learning Assessment Method(s):

- Spanish and science teachers will work in collaboration observing and helping students.

- Each student will report their findings to teachers.

- All completed tasks will show knowledge and acquired skills from the students.

- The informative essay and the PPT presentation will allow ability to read, to write and research and will be assessed.

- Students' ability to incorporate and work in a group will be assessed.
