Procedures:

Give examples of 3 things (math equation, image, descriptive sentence). Ask which of these is "information."

Provide quotes/definitions that information is everything, but there are different types used for different purposes. This will be the overall theme of the unit.

What are some different types of info formats (books, magazines, websites, blogs, journals, newspapers, movies, etc.)

What are the two main types of information sources (primary vs. secondary), Examples of the distinction.

Assessment: short exercise on survey monkey; list as many info formats as you can, including a title for each; what is the difference between primary and secondary sources and give an example; what is the difference between a magazine and a journal; what is the definition of "information" we are using for this class; what does "information" mean to you in your own words.

Quick review of different formats, primary vs secondary

Final thoughts: how do we use all this info in different ways.  entertainment, research, general knowledge, with common examples of each.  Note there may be overlap (one person might use the same fact for entertainment while another uses it for research).  For the purposes of this class, we will be focusing onfinding info for research.  However, that doesn't mean you can't use these methods for your own personal entertainment and general knowledge uses.  We're starting the class thinking in the abstract- "what is information?"  From now on we'll be focusing on the methods and information associated with the research process.  But keep in mind that finding info of any kind for any use in any format is a form of research.  See you next time!
