This lesson is designed to introduce students to a variety of styles of poetry, culminating in the creation of their own online portfolio using blogs, Glogster.com, Voicethread.com and Wordle.net. This is a collaborative effort between the TL and the ELA classroom teacher. The classroom teachers will guide the students through the process of learning various styles of poetry and poetic devices as well as determining which poems the students must write. The librarian will help to guide students through the process of creating the multi-media, digital literary magazine.

Computer, Smart Board and projector for instruction
Preplanning:
Prior to introducing this activity, students will have compiled their poetry portfolios in ELA classes, completing one poem per topic or style covered in class, using a BuILder as a guide. The TL will have created a class blog and invited students using their school email addresses to become members.
Day 1:
Direct Instruction:
The TL introduces the project to students using a smart board to show students examples of the class blog, Wordle, Glogster, and Voicethread. The TL will use self-created material to illustrate these tools. Students will be given the supporting assignment sheet with grading rubric.
Modeling and Guided Practice:
The TL will remind students of the poems they have already written and where they are located on the computer system. She will then show students how to join the blog and begin to post and tag entries.
Independent Practice:
Students will post their poems to the class blog, tagging them by poem type and keywords.
Day 2:
Modeling and Guided Practice:
The TL will show students how to create a Voicethread and where to look for copyright free images or common use images. The TL will show students how to embed their Voicethread to the blog and remind them of how to cite a source (this is a skill they have used repeatedly before).
Independent Practice:
Students will locate appropriate images and create Voicethreads from their original poetry. They will then post these to the blog entry where the poem is originally published. They will add a tag for Voicethread so that it can be easily found. They will cite any photographs or music they use in their Voicethread.
Day 3
Modeling and Guided Practice:
The TL will show students how to create a Wordle and Glogster and how to embed each into the blog.
Independent Practice:
Students will create original Wordles and Glogsters out of their poetry. They will then post these to the blog entry where the poem was originally published. They will add appropriate tags to ensure user accessibility to their work. They will cite any photographs or music they use.
Day 4:
Independent Practice:
Students will finish any work they need to complete. Both the TL and classroom teacher will be present to help any students who need further instruction or assistance. Students will write a short reaction to the project on the blog – what did they like? What didn’t they like? What would they have done differently?
Day 5:
Sharing and Reflecting:
When each student has completed their assignment, the TL and classroom teacher will show students the final project on the projector. The class will discuss what they liked and what they didn’t like about the project.National Content Standards (K-12)
