     Hi Boys and Girls.

I am Pollyanna Polliwog the Left Handed Frog but you can call me Polly.

I am going to be your guide today as we explore the library.

What does an explorer do?   PAUSE FOR ANSWER

We are honoring a famous explorer next Monday. Do you know who that is?  PAUSE FOR ANSWER

Talk about Christopher Columbus and Columbus Day.

Well as I said earlier we are going to explore our library.

To help us do that the librarian has a map to pass out to help you find your way.

Take a look at your map and see where the door to come in to the library is, the clock on the wall, the librarian’s desk and the desks where the computers that have the online catalogs (OPAC) are.

The next thing you will notice on your map is that one half of the room has shelves with numbers on them and the other side of the room has shelves with letters. Does anyone know why?

The shelves with the letters are for all the story books (fiction.) There are picture books, chapter books and series books. The letters are to show that the books are on the shelf by the author’s last name in these areas. For example if a picture book is by an author with the last name of Woods, it will be on the shelf with the big W.

The shelves on the other side of the room that have the numbers on them are for all the information (non-fiction) books. They are on the shelves by what they tell us about. For example, all the books about sports are on the shelves with the big 7 under the numbers 796.

We have one more thing to help us with exploring the library. There are colors on the shelf labels with the letters on them: BLUE is for picture books, GREEN is for chapter books, and YELLOW is for books in the series section.

Any questions so far?

I have a bunch of cards and I would like to pass them out for each one of you to see if you can find a book. They will have either a letter on them or a number and a picture on them. If you have one with a letter it will be one of three colors. Remember if it is blue you should look for a picture book with an author that’s last name begins with that letter. If it is green then look for a chapter book with an author that’s last name begins with that letter and a yellow card for the series books. In case you forget there is a list on your map. This is called a map key.

If you find the book bring the card and the book back to show the librarian. If you have trouble finding  a book ask for help.

See how they do? Reinforce

     If there is time:

There are two other sections that we have not talked about yet. They are the Biographies and the Reference section.

Who knows what a biography is?

Biographies are marked with both letters and numbers and they have a red label on them.

Who can give me an example of a reference book?

If they have no problem with that then – go to card catalog and show them same concept

Well that wraps up our exploration of the library today come back and see me real soon!

     Bye Bye.
