What an Oder!

Description:

Students need to appreciate a range of literary genres including different styles of poetry. This a lesson of literary appreciation of poetry, paying particular attention to the ode. Students will de-construct and analyze an ode and learn how to write an ode. The ode helps us all to appreciate the ordinariness in our lives. It the zen experience to embrace the ordinary. Students will recognize the specialness of the mundane.

Goals & Objectives:

Students will learn to appreciate an ode.

Students will learn to de-construct an ode for appreciation.

Students will learn to appreciate the specialness of the world of objects around them.

Students will be able to write an ode to praise the world of objects that they embrace. 

Materials:

Odes of Ray Ramirez.

Keniston, Ann. "Elementary odes." Teachers & Writers. Winter 2006-07. 

Procedures:

Students will be given hand-outs of two odes by Ray Ramirez "Ode to Banana" and "Ode to Ketchup".  The teacher will start to read "Ode to Banana" to the class, displaying a bunch of bananas, to demonstrate the ode form and its beatific elements of praise. 

 

Students will work in groups and use the rubric to answer the questions about the ode and to add any comments they might have about the ode.  After sharing their comments both on the blackboard and with their class, members of the class will share in the reading of "Ode to Ketchup".  They will share once again about this ode in groups using the rubric. 

 

After doing the group work they will share their comments on the blackboard and with the class.  When they have finished this activity they will be asked about a favorite object and then write down what makes it so special before they begin to write their own odes.

Assessment:

Students will be given a rubric to both critique two odes by Ray Ramirez and to write their own odes. The same rubric will be used to assess their odes by the teacher.
