Evaluation 2.0

Subject Area(s):

Grade Level(s):

Description:

We need to teach evaluation at a new level.

It is no longer sufficient to evaluate only isolated web pages and/or websites -- we must now also begin to evaluate the software applications running on websites (aka domains). Questions relating to authority and verifiability need to be translated onto this "application" level. For example:

Compare (Evaluate):

1. google.COM

2. live.COM

3. yahoo.COM

4. ask.COM

etc.

Goals & Objectives:

Students need to learn that the algorithms used on websites (e.g. search, mapping, etc.) introduce bias.

(this point need to be further fleshed out)

Materials:

PCs with Internet connection

Procedures:

Student-defined search query (topic irrelevant -- the enthusiasm of students is primary [e.g. "download song", "skateboard trick", "travel directions from home to school", etc.]) should be performed on various engines (including e.g. weather forecast, mapping services, public transportation schedules, etc.)

Assessment:

(no ideas yet -- early stages of development)
