Description:
This unit involves a 5th grade English teacher collaborating with the LMS on a unit on picture books. This lesson was created in hopes of following the emerging trend of using picture books with older children. The LMS will read a few books with the students. The students will then split up into groups of 2 with one person being the writer and the other being the illustrator and create their own picture books. These books will then be digitalized by being scanned into digital storybook templates.
Goals & Objectives:
Instructional Goals
- Students will gain an appreciation of picture books.
- Students will use their creativity to create a story or art work.
- Students will use technology create a digital story.
- Students will present stories/art both in a written and digital form.
Learning Objectives
- Students will read at least two picture books on their own.
- Students will either write a story or illustrate a story.
- Students will use technology to convert their stories to a digital form.
Motivational Goals
- Generate interest in the writing process
- Build confidence in students’ abilities to write or illustrate
- Build confidence in students’ abilities to read their work aloud
- Generate excitement to create a digital story
