What are they?

Citations are included at the end of research papers. They tell readers where the writer got his or her information. They are important because they demonstrate that the writer researched the topic and is providing accurate information.

Why are they important?

It is important to always cite your resources because you must tell people where you received your information. If you take ideas and information from other people and do not give them credit, it is the same as stealing.

Why do we need to follow a format when writing citations?

When writing citations, you must follow the same format throughout your works cited list. This provides the reader with a way to easily identify the sources you used when writing your paper. If readers wants to learn more about what you have written, they can use your works cited list to find additional sources of information.

Your teachers can also use the works cited list to find out if you have accurate information.
